I am not going to post the recipe for the tuna nicoise salad Ruth and I made last night because it’s so easy. Just boil the stuff you see here and cut it up, except the tuna which you sear and the olives and capers which you decorate with. Then make a shallot vinaigrette and put it on top. Then watch as your cat tries to eat it remotely via his eye-lasers.

I’m so afraid of serving fish raw. Of course, I eat it raw out all the time! Where do you buy “sushi quality” fish and how do you make sure it is really “sushi quality”?
BTW: my dog has more powerful eye-lasers than your cat!
i tried your original (whats left in the fridge) nicoise recipe and i absolutely loved it. i found a dressing recipe which suggested 1 tablespoon of mustard(dijon), 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1/3 cup of olive oil and it was amazing. sort of creamy and tangy.
nice cat, by the way.
Btw Emily, had to ask, I hope my own blog title inspired the title of one of your previous posts “Secret New York”….did?
Mmmmmm! Do you deliver?
you might as well be speaking pig latin in japanese!
wasn’t funny til i read last paragraph. then looked at pic. then laughed. I do enjoy your blog & writing & even your photos.
I enjoy the paper plate. (Unless it is one of those porcelain ones, if they exist, like the porcelain paper coffee cups they sell at Whole Foods.)
Wow, that is a laugh out loud cat.
YUM
What does Bennett mean? What are we not getting?
@Lukas, ha, that would be very chic if it was a porcelain plate made to look like a paper one, like from Muji or something. It IS a platter but irl it doesn’t look like a paper plate. Maybe it’s the angle or the lighting. Btw I love your blog especially the poop stories!
You know it’s funny, genius, that is. Some times it’s subtle, slowly grows, then kind of pops open before your eyes.
When I first read this post, days ago; I thought nice, a little odd, quaint, with a mundane photo…
But then as readers began to hold it up to light and look at it from different angles, all kinds of nuances being explored, revealed a hidden depth beneath the simplicity.
From discussions of the chicness of a porcelain platter to the, at first hidden lasers (now so obvious as to eclipse the presentation of the tasty tuna) above a kitty’s intent lips, the labors of the author emerged. reminiscent of Haiku’s kireji
Love it when this happens!
wow, emily! abbe diaz thinks you are anne boleyn! that woman is nuts!
Being #2 of 6, I hate being confused with anybody else and BTW that phillippino is not only nuts, she can kick a lot of ass, she also has laser eyes to match her eternal sweet smile
@emily, it does look like one of those Kresdale paper plates though (and was by no means meant to undermine what looks like something i’d love to eat).
and thank you–that really means a lot.
@Lukas, ha, that would be very chic if it was a porcelain plate made to look like a paper one…
It’s too bad things between you and Josh didn’t work out. You two were obviously going to bring down Abbe Diaz together. Who knows what great things the two of you could have done after that!
If only…
@Rebecca A. sushi-grade fish can be bought at Whole Foods and other fine-food stores.
@emily I really really want to make this seared tuna sometime.
I have that “Bette Davis Eyes” song by Kim Carnes stuck in my head except the lyrics go, “She’s got kitty laser eyes.”
