    Old-timey soup gag: A waiter brings a bowl of soup to a customer with a fly in it. What’s this fly doing in my soup? asks the customer. Looks like the breaststroke, says the waiter. No, says the customer. The fly appears to have drowned. Look, it’s dead. Well, the waiter says, You did ask for something with a little body in it.

    this is barely related to your post but: for about three months in high school my favorite song was “Soup is Good Food” by the dead kennedys. i once tried to explain this preference to my friend alex’s mother, but she was never able to get past the name of the band. “Dead Kennedys” was a “horribly morbid name,” she said. she wasn’t wrong.
